BACKGROUND- As herbal therapies are increasingly being used around the world because they are perceived to be free of side effects, it is important that prescriber should be made aware of their possible harm or herbal drug interaction. The need for the study is to impart knowledge to the dentist bout the usage of herbal products and their safety concern and potential drug interactionMETHOD: This is the cross sectional questionnaire study conducted among dental house surgeons of Belagavi City. To assess the knowledge and attitude of the dental house surgeons towards the use of herbal extracts in dentistry. One hundred and twenty participants were recruited in a convenient sampling cross-sectional survey. A pretested self reported questionnaire was used and results were analyzed. Reliability of the questionnaire was tested using Cronbach's alpha which was found to be 0.78. Data were analyzed using SPSS 21.RESULTS- From the present study, it was seen that the participants do not have adequate knowledge regarding usage of herbal products in dentistry.CONCLUSION-We concluded that dental house surgeons do not have sufficient knowledge about the usage of herbal products in dentistry. It seems that traditional educational models are not efficient and government with other non-governmental organizations should emphasize to advocate motivational education methods including health belief model and motivational interview at undergraduate levels. Younger students and dentists may have less motivation to change their attitude and behaviour so that we can focus our interventions on these groups.DOI:10.21276/AOHDR.1896

AbstractAimTo assess the oral hygiene status, knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) in visually impaired children before and after imparting 3 different modes of oral health education.Methodology and resultsThe present study was a nonrandomized interventional study conducted among visually impaired school children. Ninety visually impaired children aged 12–15 years were selected by lottery method and divided into 3 groups (30 children each). Group 1: ATP (audio, tactile, performance technique), Group 2: Braille, and Group 3: ATP + Braille. Twenty‐item verbal questionnaire was developed to record their knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding oral hygiene before and after imparting oral health education. The oral hygiene status was recorded and compared using plaque and gingival index after 21‐day, 1‐, 6‐, and 9‐month interval. ANOVA, Tukey's post hoc, repeated measures ANOVA, and McNemar test were used. Group 3 showed highest percentage of reduction in plaque (55%) and gingival (52%) scores when compared with Group 1 and Group 2.ConclusionThe combination of ATP (audio, tactile, and performance technique) and Braille is an effective way to improve oral hygiene status in visually impaired children. The KAP among these children also improved significantly after imparting oral health education.

AbstractAimTo assess the oral health practices and the prevalence of dental caries, and periodontal disease among transgenders.Methods and ResultsThe study was conducted on a sample of 180 participants from the transgender community in Belagavi district over a course of two months. A trained and calibrated examiners recorded oral health status according to WHO dentition status and treatment needs (1997) and Community Periodontal Index (CPI) under the supervision of the subject expert. Chi‐square test, spearman's rank correlation coefficient test, multiple linear regression and logistic regression were applied. The statistical significance was set at p ≤ .05 for all the tests. The prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease among transgenders was 72.2% and 92.2%, respectively. A positive linear correlation and a significant relationship was found between the oral hygiene practices/deleterious habits and dental caries among the transgenders. Multiple linear regression model revealed that the prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease was significantly associated with age and oral hygiene practices.ConclusionThe prevalence of dental caries and periodontal diseases among transgenders was high. These results may be of use to promote oral health promotion and establishing a paradigm for dentists to work toward improving oral health.
